The Trust was established in 1981 under S438 of the Māori Affairs Act and continues as an Ahu Whenua Trust under the Te Tura Whenua Māori Act 1993. Established to provide responsible, sustainable and culturally grounded stewardship of these ancestral lands with the vision to grow and uplift both the whenua and its people for current and future generations.

The Trust Lands comprise 49 ha. There are 28 leasehold sections each of approximately 800 m2 and 23ha which is leased to the Hinehopu Golf Club.

The Trust’s assets are vested in five trustees who have been elected by the owners and appointed by the Māori Land Court.

Te Tahuna Trustees

Our kōrero begins with the spiritual and genealogical ties that connect Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti to this whenua. Tapuaeharuru Marae, located on these lands serves not just as a gathering place but as the cultural heart and cornerstone of identity for our hapū. Through the marae, our connection to the whenua and the ancestors is preserved and strengthened.

From the time of our ancestors to the present, Te Tahuna Trust continues to serve as katiaki of both the whenua and the aspirations of Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti. The trustees are guided by the principles of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga and tino rangatiratanga – ensuring decisions today provide a prosperous, culturally rich and sustainable future for generations to come.

Ngā mihi nui ki te whānau, ngā trustees, me ngā hoa mahi katoa. Let us continue to honour our mana, our history and our vision for Te Tahuna.
