Why We Evolved
In 2025, Te Tahuna Trust embarked on a transformative brand journey – not to change who we are, but to better express the depth of our identity and the strength of our vision. As kaitiaki of our whenua and guardians of our people’s prosperity, we recognised that our visual identity needed to reflect the mana and sophistication of our governance, while honouring the rich whakapapa that defines us. Our previous branding served us well, but as we’ve grown into a $13.68 million trust with increasingly diverse partnerships – from international indigenous collaborations to cutting-edge AI language preservation projects – we needed an identity that could match our evolving role as leaders in Māori innovation and development.

How We Brought It to Life
Working with Rotorua-based design partners Redspot Creative Studio, we undertook a collaborative design process that placed our cultural narrative at the heart of every creative decision. The result is a logo system built around three carved pou beneath a unifying pare – each element steeped in the specific history of our rohe. Our three pou represent the succession of pā tūwatawata that tell our ancestral story:

  1. Pou Tahiwihiwi (The Past) – anchoring us in whakapapa and the courage of our tīpuna.
  2. Pou Tawhitinui (The Present) – representing adaptation and the challenges we navigate today.
  3. Pou Te Waiwherowhero (The Future) – carrying our aspirations for generations to come.
  4. The pare that crowns our logo binds these temporal elements together, symbolising unity, protection, and our collective vision that bridges past, present, and future.

Our colour palette draws from the natural tones of our rohe – from the deep blues of Rotoiti to the greens of our harakeke, creating a sophisticated visual language that is both contemporary and deeply rooted in place.

Digital Innovation
Alongside our visual rebrand, we’ve launched a completely redesigned website at tetahuna.maori.nz that serves as a modern gateway for our shareholders and partners. The new digital platform enhances accessibility, provides transparent financial reporting, and creates better pathways for our whānau to engage with grant opportunities and Trust initiatives.

Moving Forward
This brand evolution positions Te Tahuna Trust not just as a land administration entity, but as a forward-thinking organisation that can partner confidently with international bodies, technology innovators, and government agencies while never losing sight of our foundational responsibilities to our whenua and our people. Every element of our new identity has been designed to tell our story with strength, consistency, and clarity – ensuring that whether we’re presenting to shareholders at Tapuaeharuru Marae or collaborating with indigenous partners in California, our mana is immediately visible and our values unmistakable.

E kore te kākahu e taea te unu.
The cloak cannot be removed.

Our new brand is not a costume we wear, but the authentic expression of who we have always been – proud descendants of Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti, innovative guardians of Te Tahuna.
